Svensk Filmindustri acquires Sonet Film from Modern Times Group

2007-12-17 10:39:39

Scandinavian major Svensk Filmindustri (SF) has acquired all film rights in the Swedish production and distribution entity Sonet Film from Modern Times Group (MTG). The deal also includes the brand name Sonet Film.

SF has in connection with the acquisition appointed Peter Possne CEO of a new production entity, named Sonet Film. The company aims to produce 2 -3 high quality feature films per year with big box-office potential.

A few films are currently under development, amongst them The Hunters 2, a sequel to the Swedish huge box-office hit The Hunters (Jägarna) in 1996 and Att skjuta arbetare based on best-selling author Kerstin Thorwall’s novel from 1993. Mr. Possne is currently also planning a new feature film with director Kay Pollak, which will be the first one for Pollak after the enormous success with As it is in Heaven.

Sonet Film AB was founded in 1984 and Peter Possne has since then acted as CEO of the company. In that position Mr. Possne was a part of the producer team behind the Oscar nominated As it is in Heaven and also served as executive producer on the Spyglass Entertainment/Hollywood Pictures feature The Invisible.

Sonet Film will operate independently from SF’s own production department, whose goals and direction will not be affected by the acquisition. SF is already very strong on production and is currently in post-production of the biggest Scandinavian film project ever, the two feature films of Arn – The Knight Templar, based on Jan Guillou’s hugely successful novels. SF is also producing the animated feature Mommy Moo and Crow, co-producing the drama Angel with director Colin Nutley and his production company Sweetwater as well as the comedy Rallybrudar with GF Studios.

“Sonet Film and Peter Possne have for many years shown an extraordinary capability to tie up new exciting projects and talents that has generated a number of successes at the Swedish cinema.

For us it is of utmost importance that Peter continues to develop the Sonet profile and keep a close relationship with existing partners in the Swedish film environment.

Through the new production entity we will further strengthen our involvement in Swedish film production and I am convinced that we will bring a lot of new exciting feature films to the screen in the future”, says Rasmus Ramstad, President and CEO of Svensk Filmindustri.

“This is a dream come true for me. It is very encouraging indeed that SF gives me a Go to launch and run a “new” Sonet Film. I can continue to fully dedicate myself to film production and further develop my contacts within the Swedish and international film community.
SF has a long and prosperous tradition of film production and on top of that a very strong and professional distribution line which I am looking forward to be a part of.

I strongly believe that Sonet Film together with SF will be an exciting and dynamic force within the Swedish film environment in the years to come, says Peter Possne, CEO of Sonet Film.

Apart from Swedish production SF is producing or is otherwise involved in approximately 25 feature films through its own operations in Norway, Denmark and Finland.
