Black and White
Based on a landmark legal case that turned the conservative, racist establishment of provincial 50’s Australia upside down, Black and White is a compelling legal thriller showing vividly that in a civilized society justice can never be skin deep.
When passionate but inexperienced lawyer, David O’Sullivan (multi-award winning Robert Carlyle) is first assigned to the horrific case of the rape and murder of an eight year old girl in the remote desert town of Ceduna, he is assured it is an open and shut case, that the evidence is black and white.
As his investigation takes him deeper and deeper beneath the prim surface of respectable 50’s Adelaide though he soon begins to realize that his Aboriginal defendant has been routinely framed by a brooding, violent establishment with white hands but dark hearts.
With powerhouse performances from multi-award winning Robert Carlyle (The Full Monty, The World Is Not Enough, Trainspotting) as the young lawyer, Kerry Fox (Shallow Grave, Intimacy) as his partner and Charles Dance (Alien 3, Gosford Park) as the menacing but charismatic Crown Prosecutor committed to destroying them, Black and White is the inspiring story of a pair of legal giant slayers who helped liberalize a whole continent.
With a screenplay by award-winning Louis Nowra, (Australian Film Institute's Best Adapted Screenplay, 1996), Black and White shoes no matter how indestructible a corrupt system may seem, when confronted with an incorruptible heart, only one is strong enough to survive…
