Per-Olav is the only Norwegian director to have been nominated for the Gullruten Prize (TV), Hedda Prize (Theatre) and the Komi Prize (Comedy) with his productions.

He commenced his theatre career in the USA in the early
1990's. After working as an assistant director to Stein Winge he wrote and directed several plays in the United States.

Sørensen has for the last few years divided his work
between Oslo’s National Theatre, his own independent
POS Theatre Company and television. At the National Theatre he has staged "I hired a Contract Killer" and "Latter Day Saints", as well as the co-productions "Grand Old Man", "KOM" and the Ibsen-inspired "TanGhost".

In television he has directed all 30 episodes of the successful TV2 series "Six Like Us", 10 episodes of the comedy drama "Ali Reza and the Rezas" and Uni Lindell’s crime drama "The Honey Trap".
